The brief

What the site needed.

Dalkia instructed BBS to fit out designated areas of The Grange Academy in Runcorn, with two to three working days of access during the summer holidays.

The room decided the product. Zip-lock cassette blinds went where the school wanted light shut out properly: fully enclosed side channels, no gaps down the sides, no loose fabric to be pulled at. Screen fabric roller blinds went on the vision panels and the internal and external glazing, because the glare needed knocking back without blinding off the sightlines that safeguarding depends on. Vertical blinds went into the meeting rooms and offices, where staff just want to angle the light off a screen.

The project-specific RAMS recorded site management, fixing substrates, access equipment, dust control and the working-at-height method. Fixings were specified for what the blinds actually met, self-drilling into aluminium frames, suitable anchors or confirmed studs in plasterboard, and BS EN 13120 child safety devices were fitted and adjusted on every unit.

Another summer holiday project finished and ready for September. Dalkia and The Grange Academy are named here with client consent.

What we did

A specification shaped around the setting.

  1. 01

    Zip-lock cassette blinds

Fully enclosed side channels for total light control, with no gaps and no loose fabric to catch in a busy school.

  2. 02

    Screen fabric roller blinds

Glare control on vision panels and internal and external glazing, chosen to keep sightlines clear for safeguarding.

  3. 03

    Vertical blinds

Practical adjustable shading for the meeting rooms and offices.

  4. 04

    Aluminium frames

Self-drilling fixings were specified where the blinds met aluminium window frames.

  5. 05

    Plasterboard

Suitable anchors or confirmed studs were used for plasterboard fixing points.

  6. 06

    Child safety

BS EN 13120 child safety devices were fitted and adjusted on every unit.

Working on site

Planned around the building, not just the windows.

  1. 01

    Follow site control

Works were instructed through the principal contractor's site management and began with the required induction.

  2. 02

    Check before drilling

The asbestos register was checked before drilling, with no work into textured coatings, casings or unconfirmed materials.

  3. 03

    Control dust and RPE

On-tool HEPA extraction was carried for masonry drilling. P3 RPE users were face fit tested in July 2026 under BBS-COSHH-003.

  4. 04

    Work at height

Tagged EN 131 professional step ladders and two operatives were used, with one at height and one as the ground-level safety observer.

  5. 05

    Keep document control

The programme referenced training matrix BBS-TM-001 and tool register BBS-TL-001 alongside the project-specific RAMS.

The result

What changed for the space.

The mixed blind fit-out was delivered inside the school holiday access plan, with the 2 to 3 day programme organised around the principal contractor's site controls and every room ready for September.

  • Three blind types matched to what each room actually needed
  • Vision panel sightlines kept clear for safeguarding
  • Installed inside the summer holiday access window
