Can you wash vertical blinds?
Sometimes, and it depends on the louvre. Many polyester fabric louvres can be washed by hand in lukewarm water with a little mild detergent, laid flat or hung to dry, and never wrung, tumble dried or ironed. Stiffened, blackout backed, PVC and specialist fabrics usually cannot be soaked, because water lifts the stiffening or the coating and the louvre comes out wavy. Do not put louvres in a washing machine unless the manufacturer’s care label says you can, and even then use a cold, gentle cycle with the louvres inside a pillowcase.
If you are not sure what the louvre is made of, treat it as not washable and follow the dusting and spot cleaning steps below. A wavy louvre cannot be flattened again, but a marked one can usually be replaced on its own.
Check the material first
Vertical blinds can use fabric louvres, rigid materials or finishes with their own care requirements. Before using water, detergent or a cleaning tool, check any label or information supplied with the blind.
If the material is unclear, start with dry dusting and ask BBS before trying a stronger method. Steam, soaking and household chemicals can alter some finishes, so they should not be the automatic first choice.
Remove loose dust
Turn the louvres so the broad face is easy to reach. Work from the top down with a clean microfibre cloth, a soft duster or a vacuum cleaner on low power with a suitable brush attachment.
Support the louvre with one hand and clean with the other. Avoid pulling sideways or putting weight through the hanger. Turn the louvres and repeat on the reverse face.
Deal with a small mark
For a material that allows damp cleaning, mix a small amount of mild detergent with lukewarm water. Test it on an inconspicuous area and wait for the fabric to dry before continuing.
Blot or wipe gently rather than scrubbing. Work on a limited area and avoid saturating the louvre. Use a second clean, lightly damp cloth to remove residue, then leave the blind open with space around it until completely dry.
Check the headrail and weights
Dust the headrail and wipe accessible hard surfaces with a barely damp cloth. Do not spray cleaner directly into the mechanism. Check that the bottom weights and connecting chain, where present, sit correctly and are not cracked or twisted.
Operate the blind slowly after cleaning. If a louvre does not turn with the others, a hanger is damaged or the track feels unusually stiff, stop rather than forcing it.
Know when to ask for help
A set of sound louvres can sometimes be refreshed or replaced without changing the whole blind. A damaged track, repeated misalignment or badly marked specialist fabric may need a closer assessment.
Send a clear photograph of the full blind and a second image of the damaged part. BBS can use that context to tell you whether replacement louvres or a new made-to-measure blind is the sensible next step. We do not carry out repairs on domestic blinds, but a replacement is usually quicker and cheaper than people expect.
