Start with the job of the window
The question is not whether blinds are better than curtains in every home. It is which treatment works for this window, in this room, for the way you live.
Blinds usually sit closer to the glazing and take up less space. Depending on the product, they can filter light, darken a room or adjust privacy without covering the whole window. Curtains add softness, texture and a stronger decorative frame. With the right lining, they can also make a room feel more settled in the evening.
Compare light and privacy
Venetian and vertical blinds allow small changes through the day because the slats can be tilted. Roller blinds give a clean fabric panel that can be raised or lowered. Roman blinds introduce fabric while remaining contained within or just outside the window opening.
Curtains give broad cover and can make a room feel private when drawn, but they do not offer the same fine adjustment. In a living room, combining a blind with curtains can provide flexible daytime control and a softer evening finish.
Check the space around the opening
Measure the idea, not only the glass. A radiator beneath the sill, a sofa beside the window or limited wall space can all affect how curtains sit. Window handles and inward-opening doors may influence which blind system is suitable.
Bay windows and glazed doors often benefit from a product planned around each panel. A home visit lets the fitter check clearances and discuss how the treatment will look when it is fully open as well as closed.
Think about care and daily use
Hard slats can be wiped, while fabric treatments usually need gentler care. Kitchens and busy family spaces may favour surfaces that are straightforward to maintain. Bedrooms may place more weight on light reduction and a quiet, soft finish.
Operation matters too. Consider who will use the window, how often it will move and whether a frame-fitted or motorised option would make daily use easier. Ask BBS to explain the current controls available for the chosen product.
You can use both
A blind and curtain combination is not unnecessary duplication when each layer has a clear job. The blind can manage daylight and privacy near the glass. The curtains can add texture, frame the view and change the room after dark.
Keep the colours connected, but they do not have to match exactly. A plain blind can settle a patterned curtain, while a textured Roman blind can add interest beside simpler full-length fabric.
